Intro to Musical Theatre

Latin Social Dance
Led by Cuban dance master Sergio Rodriguez, this vibrant class will teach various Latin social dance forms, including salsa, merengue, bachata, and cha cha cha. Students will learn how to understand and feel the movements according to the respective music and rhythm styles – both individually and with a partner. Sergio will give cultural context to each of the dance forms. Everyone is welcome – you do not need a partner or previous dance knowledge. This is a perfect introduction to the social dance scene in Birmingham.

Sketch Comedy in the Ham
Ever wanted to be in a sketch comedy show like SNL, Portlandia or Key and Peele? This is nine -week course will give you experience creating a live sketch comedy show. Students will write, and star in a one-hour long sketch comedy show to be presented at the end of the session. Students begin by learning basic improv, acting and writing techniques. We will study the works of previous sketch comedy groups. Use improv to develop ideas and use them to write sketches. Students will have writing assignments outside of class to be brought in for discussion. We will move towards developing an individual style as a sketch comedy writer. Each member of the cast will work independently and in the group to construct at least two sketches. Toward week 6 we will tighten up the sketches, begin rehearsals and finally perform the show. This course will teach you the skills needed to write and perform funny and original material on stage. Students will leave the class with a strong understanding of sketch, production and a writing portfolio.
