Musical Theatre Performance - Online
This ArtPlay course is a study of musical theatre songs and techniques for their performance. Teaching Artist Reid Watson will prepare and equip the performer with confidence as it relates to musical theatre. While studying important aspects of musical theatre history, we will examine the cohort's existing repertoire, and find new material appropriate for each student's strengths. Musical Theatre Performance will concentrate on the learning process of acting and singing musical theatre songs. Students will improve their abilities to learn songs quickly, deal with nerves, cut a song into a needed audition length, and create a musical theatre binder. While students have taken this course to prepare for college auditions, show choir adjudications, community or professional productions, and masterclasses, please know that all levels of experience are welcome... If you love musical theatre, then this is the class for you!

Carlos Pino is a Jazz guitarist, composer and educator. A graduate from the University of Alabama (B.A.) and Rutgers University (M.M. in Jazz Studies), Carlos has shared the stage with Ellis Marsalis, Claudio Roditi, Oteil Burbridge, Col. Bruce Hampton and Bill Kruetzmann. He spends much of his time in musical theatre performing regularly with Red Mountain Theatre and Alabama Shakespeare Festival. In addition to performing, Carlos has been teaching guitar lessons privately for over a decade and is adjunct faculty (jazz guitar) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Now based in Birmingham, AL, she has received grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Lowder Foundation and is a member of the National Association of Teachers Singing.

Sight Singing Fundamentals - Online
This class is designed to cover the notation, concepts, and application of beginning music theory as it relates to solo music selections. Students will be able to identify clefs, note names, keys and key signatures, as well as melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic patterns. Through sight singing practice and ear training, students will also be given a framework to learn and read music on their own when a recording for a song might not always be available. The goal of this class is to empower the student to take greater ownership of their musical journey- from selection of song, to learning the music independently, to a genuine, self-decided performance.

Digital Mixtape - Online
Digital Mixtape is an interdisciplinary course that explores the technique of telling digital stories. A digital story is a personal narrative told in the author/storyteller's voice usually from a first-person perspective that is produced and accessed using digital mediums (video, audio, etc.). This course will be taught as a collaborative seminar/workshop format, with a focus on developing a well-told story. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of storytelling. They will develop an ability to strengthen writing skills through story boarding and drafting stories. In addition, students will be able to think critically about voice and whose stories get told and why. Students can also expect to develop technical skills as they produce their own digital story by the end of the course. Digital stories can be shared on a variety of platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, and Vimeo.

Embroidery 101 - Online
Join Nikki Kintner, a local textile artist and owner of Stitch & Petal, for this Beginner’s Modern Hand-Embroidery Course. Over five weeks and through three different projects, students will become familiar with embroidery tools, learn to set and finish hoops, and master four of the most-used stitches in modern hand-embroidery. The projects include a stitch sampler, a floral fabric outline piece and a pattern designed by Nikki. Each project will be started in class, but then students will continue their embroidery at home in between classes. After completing this course students will be able to confidently complete any beginner hand-embroidery patterns! The Art and Craft of Creative Nonfiction For Teens - Online
Creative nonfiction is defined as “true stories, well told.” And the art of telling your true stories well is just what you’ll learn in this interactive class. Along the way we’ll examine the craft of establishing voice, theme, mood, character, and place and put what we’ve learned to use with writing prompts. Through weekly readings you’ll receive support and constructive feedback about your pieces from the instructor and the other attendees. We’ll also talk about careers that involve writing and communication and how you could turn your writing hobby into a rewarding profession.

So You Think You Can Broadway - Online
This class was specifically requested by our supportive ArtPlay parents and created for stage moms, dads, and any other adult looking for a creative outlet. Class structure will begin with a warm-up (specific focus given to basic understanding of dance.) Then, get ready to say "yaaaas" while doing cardio to Barbara Streisand and Liza Minelli, followed by isolations/movement sequences/core training to modern musicals such as Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, Heathers, SIX, and stretch it out to more of your requested favorites. Then, get ready to put on an optional costume for each week's Broadway dance! We will be aiming for the 5 Cs: Clarity, Control, Comfort, Choreography, and Calories. Please know that all levels of experience, abilities, and body-types are welcome and encouraged. Diane McNaron has appeared in recital, cabaret, oratorio and opera throughout the US and in Germany, Austria, Italy and Australia. She produces and appears with two Cabaret troupes and has directed over 40 opera, cabaret and musical theatre productions. Diane earned an M.M. from Florida State University and did post graduate work at Indiana University. Now based in Birmingham, AL, she has received grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Lowder Foundation and is a member of the National Association of Teachers Singing.

Carlos Pino is a Jazz guitarist, composer and educator. A graduate from the University of Alabama (B.A.) and Rutgers University (M.M. in Jazz Studies), Carlos has shared the stage with Ellis Marsalis, Claudio Roditi, Oteil Burbridge, Col. Bruce Hampton and Bill Kruetzmann. He spends much of his time in musical theatre performing regularly with Red Mountain Theatre and Alabama Shakespeare Festival. In addition to performing, Carlos has been teaching guitar lessons privately for over a decade and is adjunct faculty (jazz guitar) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Reid Watson has served as an ArtPlay teaching artist for the past 9 years. He is a proud member of Actors' Equity Association (A.E.A.) His research areas include directing, musical staging, theatrical intimacy direction, performance pedagogy, and theatre education. Reid teaches at The University of Alabama, where he also serves as a resident director for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Reid holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University, and is currently writing the thesis for his M.F.A. in Theatre-Directing. He has also served as the theatre teacher at Pinson Valley High School and The William T. Sherman School (P.S. 87.) For ArtPlay, Reid has directed and choreographed over 6 shows. He co-leads ArtPlay's A-Team with Heath Mixon. His performance credits include the Off-Broadway Revival of Urinetown at the American Theatre of Actors. A few of his performance credits include Ragtime, Parade, Sunday in the Park with George, Hairspray, Street Scene, and Big River.
